Myhusband is a straight forward, tell you like it is, man. I've always admiredthat about him. There is no sugar coating with him. If you are doing somethingwrong, he'll tell you.

Recently, my husband’s co-worker, who is married, showed my husband an explicitemail he received from his ex-girlfriend. His co-worker proudly showed it off,implying: “Isn't that cool?”

Of course, my husband didn't hold back his opinion. "Are you crazy?" my husband yelled, while reminding him abouthis wife and children.

A few days later, my husband overheard his co-worker whispering on the phone athis desk. My husband knew he was talking to that woman. So he started sendinghim warning messages that popped up on his computer.

"Run!" he wrote. "Flee from it!" he warned. "Don't throw away your family" hereminded him. My husband then wrote a message illustrating this man’s family asthe light and the girl as the darkness, while admonishing him to choose thelight.

After the man got off the phone, he came up to my husband and thanked him, withgratitude, for snapping him back to reality. This man is a non-believer, but hesurprisingly acknowledged Jesus in my husband for showing him the light.

Later that evening, my husband received a call from his co-worker's wife.Though she wasn't too happy with her husband, she was thankful my husbandstopped him. She was grateful my husband didn't sit back and silently watch herhusband as he was led astray by the seductive words of his ex-girlfriend.

“With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smoothtalk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like adeer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird dartinginto a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.” —Proverbs7:21-23

I am so proud of my husband for not keeping silent. I praise him for using godlywisdom and fighting for that family.

Ifyou are "flirting" around with temptation today, flee from it! Runand don't look back! The more this man "flirted" with the temptation,the more it blinded him from reality. If God hadn't used my husband to be thevoice of reason, I'm sure he would have fallen into the deadly trap that wouldhave cost him his family.

"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins man commits are outsidethe body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body." —1Corinthians 6:18

Here is an excerpt from her book "You Can Have A Happy Family" - Chapter Three (The Real Enemy – Out to Destroy YourFamily)

We’re not perfect. God will always make a way outwhen we fall. There may be consequences for what we’ve done, but God is able towork them out for the good of our families if we turn to Him. Psalm 103:10 saysthat God does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to ouriniquities. Verse 14 says that God knows how we wereformed. He remembers we are dust. This means God knows we are going to makemistakes. It’s our nature.

God can take the consequences that come from thewrong choices we make and use those to teach us. When we allow God to teach usthrough our consequences, we learn and grow from our mistakes. God uses theconsequences to open our eyes and lead us to where we need to be. Like I saidearlier, in my marriage, God used my consequences to open my eyes to see I wassearching in the wrong direction. It was not where I wanted to go.

I praise God He was imploring me to turn to Himinstead of abandoning me in my mess. I know I deserved more consequences than Ireceived. I praise God I didn’t turn away from His warnings because I know Iwould be in a heap of a mess today. Instead, I am set free from sin and have atransformed family.

What inspired you to write your book?

Listeningto an Easter sermon during a church service held at the Anglican church inCasablanca, and realizing that the manner in which Jesus and His disciples ateresembled the dining style of the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa. Later, while perusing cookbooks in a second hand store, I cameacross one purporting to give recipes from biblical times. Many recipesincluded ingredients early Christians had no access to, such as tomatoes,potatoes, citrus, or peppers, all New World ingredients. That’s when theinspiration hit me: why not write recipes based SOLELY on the 84 foodstuffsmentioned in the Old and New Testaments.

Inresearching the book, I consulted with experts in biblical foods in the US andabroad. I was able to reproduce Ezekiel’s Bread, strictly from the ingredientsmentioned in Ezekiel 4:9.

Whatkinds of reactions has the book generated thus far?

Verypositive. Indeed, this is a second edition. The first, published by Ten SpeedPress, sold 15,000 copies. Book clubs and Bible study groups often use it toprepare a biblical meal.

What'sthe main message that you'd like readers to take away from it?

Returningto a simpler lifestyle, and to a diet based upon seasonal ingredients availablelocally, is the most spiritually satisfying.

Get Me Off Of This Hamster Wheel - Please!

Are you frazzled? Did the start of the New Year bring anxietyor dread? Are you over-committed? Do youfeel like you’re running faster and faster to just keep up with everything? Well – you’re notalone!

This year in particularI’m feeling a sense that God wants me to re-evaluate my day-to-day schedule andgeneral life purpose. In preparation forthis – I’m asking Him to validate and confirm His plans for me in the weeks andmonths ahead through His Word, His people, and His Spirit. There are even some private family matters thatare stealing some of my time, energy and emotional stamina. All themore reason for me to press into God, and seek the mind of Christ in thismatter.

I am putting thesethoughts on paper (as well as in this post) for a reason: Writing things down brings a level ofcommitment that in turn helps us meet our goals. It’s an accountability method that God usedwith the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk. The Lord told him to, “Write thevision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it” (Hab.2:2). Habakkuk needed to deliberatelycast the vision before the people as a catalyst for their obedience. God assured him that though the vision may be delayedfar into the future, God would surely bring it to pass. God’s timing is not our timing. His ways are not our ways. If your plans are God-inspired, God ordained,and God led, they will come to fruition.

These are the four areasHe is clearly speaking to me:

Prepare Plan Prioritize Pursue

PREPARE

This step involves quietness before the Lord. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, andknow that I am God”. Prayer andspending time in God’s Word helps our Spirit prepare for what He has to say to us regarding ourindividual lives and service to Him. However,beware of choosing your own destiny. Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heartplans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” God’s inspiration is often the medium used tobind the project spiritually to Him. HisSpirit bears witness with your Spirit as you begin to walk in His willconcerning your endeavors.

PLAN

This is a two-step process: 1. Count the cost 2. Give your agenda to God

Counting the cost ishelpful in determining your supply line and tools necessary to complete theventure. Jesus said in Luke 14:28-30, “…for which of you, intending to build atower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough tofinish it – lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finishit, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and wasnot able to finish.” Of course, Hewas talking about what it would take to become one of His disciples – but theprinciple still applies to your level of follow-through and commitment. Jesus will be the ultimate“supply line” and He will gift you for what He calls you to do. You may need toevaluate the time required, family obligations, health concerns, or othervariables in order to say “yes” at this time in your life.

Giving your agenda to Godinvolves believing in the trustworthiness of His Sovereignty, and in knowing that He is thearchitect and builder of your blueprints. Psalm 33:10 says, “He [The Lord]makes the plans of the people of no effect.” In other words, when God interrupts ourwell-ordered and designed map for our life, we need to recognize and welcome itas an opportunity – not a hindrance. God’s route to the finish line will most likely not be what youhad in mind.

PRIORITIZE

This is ultimately the most effective way tobring about your plans in a smooth and stress-free manner. As Christians, God gives us spiritual purposeand direction. His love “compels us” to live for Him and serveHim in a way that bring Him glory.

How do we effectivelyprioritize all that we have to do? How do we determine in what order we should pursue ourobligations and dreams? Learninghow to prioritize is learning to focus on the necessary tasks. There are many things competing for yourattention and time. Learning to listen to theLord’s voice and the prompt of His Spirit is imperative to setting up yourpriorities. Not every good thing is a God thing.

Remember - when we submitto and honor our spouses, parents, employers and church leaders – we are doingit unto the Lord Himself. We need to usewisdom and spiritual sensitivity as we arrange our schedules and assignments. It’s okay to not say “Yes” to every invitation andministry opportunity. Will you make the right decision every time? No! Just remember, “…all things worktogether for good to those who love God, to those who are the called accordingto His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

PURSUE

This step involves the volition of thewill. We need to “go after” our dream,project or ministry with a genuine determination to lift Christ up and stay inthe background. John the Baptist boldly proclaimed, “He mustincrease, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

The Apostle Paul told thechurch at Colosse, “And whatever you do,do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not to men” (Colossians 3:23). Bless the Lord by pursuing your duties andprojects with an attitude of gratitude – not a sour disposition. Do your personal best and rely on Hisstrength, grace and gifting to provide the desired results. God wants your availability – not yourability.

To sum it all up – thisyear is my year for action. Not to runout and get ahead of God – but to fall in line behind Him – walking in His footsteps as we journey forward inlife together.

Great Resources for Marital Help

Since this is the start of a new year, I wanted to highlight some great reading material for marriages. Whether you're in a Christian marriage or in a spiritually unequal marriage, these books have some great insight and wisdom from God's perspective.

For Women Only
This book was originally released in 2004. Shaunti Feldhahn wrote For Women Only, which became a best seller and conversation starter in many households. Then in 2006 she and Wanda King, under the guidance of LifeWay Christian Resources, developed the Bible Study For Women Only as a life-changing tool.

This is a statement from the author herself - "Ladies, I know we're at different places as we start our journey together. Some of you are in great relationships, others in very difficult ones, and still others in no particular romantic relationship right now. Some women may find these revelations fun, fascinating, or convicting; while others of you may find them very hard to hear and even harder to accept."

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this study at our church and found it to be eye-opening and convicting. I highly recommend it! You can find it on Amazon and other online retailers.

Winning Him Without Words
Next on my list is a new book released in 2011 from my friends Lynn Donovan and Dineen Miller. Winning Him Without Words is a unique and God inspired book for women living in a spiritually unequal marriage. They are both married to unbelieving husbands, and their desire is for you to thrive, not just survive in your marriage. It is based on the Bible passage in I Peter 3.

This is from the Introduction in their book - "Each of the 10 chapters provides a key principle to thriving in your spiritually mismatched marriage. Near the end of each chapter, we have included discovery questions designed to help move you closer to Christ and discover practical steps to grow in your marriage. We know it won't be easy to look deeply into places that have lived in darkness for perhaps years, but the promise of freedom awaits."

I am still making my way through this incredible book. All I can say is, "Wow!" I certainly recommend reading this one! You can purchase it on Amazon and from many other fine Christian retailers.

How to be the Happy Wife of an Unsaved Husband
This little book was one of the first ones I read when I gave my life to Jesus back in 1989. At that time, there were few books that addressed living in a spiritually mismatched marriage. Linda Davis wrote How to be the Happy Wife of an Unsaved Husband in response to a definite prompting - a divine burden (as she puts it).

The Christian wife of an unsaved husband has a special ministry that no one else can fulfill. Linda Davis explains how to minister to your husband while living a rewarding life both spiritually and personally. Drawing from personal experience and biblical wisdom, she describes how you can be happy in spite of your circumstances.

This book gave me great insight into God's perspective on marriage, and how the wife in an unequally-yoked marriage can model Christ to her husband in the midst of their struggles. This is a classic and one you might want to read for yourself. You can purchase it on Amazon here.

Mission Possible - Spiritual Covering
Last, but not least, is my book Mission Possible -Spiritual Covering was written nearly 10 years prior to its publication in 2009. The book was a labor of love for me and great care was taken in expressing the heart of God in its message to women who love Jesus, but their spouse doesn't share their passion. I have added Bible study questions and self-reflection questions at the end of each chapter for personal benefit and growth.

New Year's Resolutions for a Happy Anniversary!

It’s a brand new year and the start of a new decade inour marriage. We are celebrating our 30^thwedding anniversary today – January 2^nd, 2012.

I must preface it by saying this is my 2^ndmarriage. I got married right out of high school and was divorced 4yrs. later. I remarried at the age of 26, and 7 years into our marriage I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

As I look back over our marital journey, I recognize theups and downs, the good, bad and ugly, and the day to day struggles that formthe bond of commitment we still share today. I pledged to the Lord that this year I would write out a list of “30Things I Love Most About My Husband” and include it in his anniversarycard. That’s one good character trait orquality for every year of marriage!

When I met the Lord Jesus personally, it changed my lifeforever. Since that time I have grown inmy faith and have learned that my personal happiness is rooted and grounded in thelove of Christ. I’ve come to realize thatmy husband cannot meet all of my needs and expectations. Only Jesus Christ can bring true joy andcontentment in life. I choose not todwell on the negative – but rather focus on the positive.

I Peter 3:1-4 says, “Likewise you wives, be submissive toyour own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without aword, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaseconduct accompanied by fear. Do not let your beauty be that outward adorning ofarranging the hair, of wearing gold, or of putting on fine apparel; but let itbe the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible ornament of a gentleand quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”

Happy New Year! A Fresh Start...

The New Year is almost here! A chance to START OVER and begin anew!

The Apostle Paulstates in Philippians verse 13-14, “but one thing Ido, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forward to thosethings which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upwardcall of God in Christ Jesus.”

In order to move forward - we must remain unencumbered. No baggage allowed!

Satan will do his best to remind us of the past, but we need to remind him of his future!

Here are a few Bible verses that can encourage us as we prepare to forge ahead in 2012:

Isaiah43:18-19 says, “Do not remember theformer things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth;shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers inthe desert.”

Romans 8:1 declares, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit."

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, go give you a future and a hope."

Psalm 25:4-5 says, "Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day."

Isaiah 54:17 states, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord."

Extreme Makeover - Earthly Edition

I'm sure most of you have seen the ABC hit "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" on Sunday nights at one time or another. An eligible contestant is chosen based upon their inspiring story and financial inability to fix-up or remodel their own home. Often it is someone in the community that has a public outreach, NGO, or ministry.

Many times the structure is completely demolished and then rebuilt from the ground up. A local builder and hundreds of volunteers help make the dream come true for the deserving family. Companies donate materials, appliances, furniture and decor items for the entire house, often including specially designed upgrades.

The exciting part is when Ty yells out to the waiting crowd, "Move that bus!" Then the family and all of the onlookers get to see the "new house" for the first time. What a sight to behold!

There's something even more incredible, and that's an Extreme Makeover - Earthly Edition! When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior - you become a "new" dwelling place for God's Spirit. The Apostle Paul says in II Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

Demolition can be painful and messy - but it ultimately gives way to bigger and better!

We're not just talking about a remodeling job here - we're talking NEW from the inside-out! You now have a new foundation - and Jesus Christ Himself is the Chief Cornerstone (I Peter 2:6). Your spirit man is made incorruptible - no longer subject to decay and ruin (I Corinthians 15:53). Your mind is renewed (Romans 12:2) and you exhibit new behaviors (Galatians 5:22). You begin to see life differently...

Although construction often interrupts day to day activity, DO allow Jesus to continue His work in you! The prophet Isaiah tells us, "Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?" (Isaiah 43:19). God has an Extreme agenda for us that includes an "out of the box" experience. We must embrace our rebirth and walk in the newness of life!

On the show, watching that huge bus move is exhilarating - but even more so, is seeing the NEW you! Paul declares, "we have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him..." (Colossians 3:10).

The New Year is quickly approaching! Make sure you're a NEW Extreme Edition, and not the old dilapidated one. Your spouse is observing the ongoing mess and construction. Remind them you're still a "WORK IN PROGRESS"...

What is especially endearing is the Babe in the manger - the little Lord Jesus - asleep in the hay. Were there really that many onlookers at the Babe's birth?

If you have little ones at home - children or grandchildren - read this darling song together, making sure to use different voices for the animals.

Christmas – What Gift Do You Bring Him?

If you are in aspiritually uneven marriage, the holiday season can be stressful anduncertain.

However, thePrince of Peace wants you to focus on Him. Jesus desires yourlove, devotion and obedience. But we also have to recognize His Deity, asdid the wise men of old.

The customary Christmasstory in Matthew chapter 2 is set in the hill country of Judea, about fivemiles southwest of Jerusalem in the area surrounding the town ofBethlehem.

Micah 5:2 refers to Bethlehemas “…little among the thousands of Judah,Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be ruler in Israel, Whosegoings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

Matthew 2:1-2 recordsdetails of the magi’s visit from the East to pay homage to the newborn King asfollows: Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod theking, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is Hewho has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East andhave come to worship Him.”

Traditionally we celebratethe magi’s worship of our Lord – otherwise known as Epiphany – in January, but I wanted to highlight it during thisseason of giving. The three giftsoffered represent Jesus Christ as our King, Priest and Prophet. Scripture references are Daniel9:24-27, Deuteronomy 18:15, and Psalm 110:4.

Some church historians,particularly in the West, have named the three magi in Scripture as: Melchior,a king of Arabia who most likely was the oldest of the kings; Balthasar, a kingfrom Saba (present day Yemen); and Caspar, a king from Tarsus (present daysouthern Turkey).

Their unusual and highlyvalued presents were Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Gold was a giftbefitting a king. In the book of Exodus, the tabernacle in which God Himselfdwelt housed various items which were either crafted from solid gold oroverlaid in gold. Gold itself is symbolicof royalty and wealth, and is representative of heaven’s grandeur on thestreets of gold mentioned in the bookof Revelation.

Frankincense was a chiefingredient in the incense which was to be burned continually in thetabernacle. In the book of Revelationthe prayers of the saints are rising to God’s throne as burning incense.

Myrrh was a chief ingredientin the anointing oil used in ceremonial rituals to dedicate kings and prophetsto the Lord’s service. It was also used in the burial process along with otherherbs and spices to preserve the body as mentioned in John 19:39.

Matthew 2:11 states, “And when they (magi) had come into thehouse, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down andworshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented giftsto Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

You say, “What can I bringJesus?” I’m not royalty… I’ve nottraveled thousands of miles to see Him… I don’t have an extravagant gift tohand Him. Ah – but you do. His desire isto have your heart this Christmas season…

We often sing the more popularstanzas in Christmas hymns and omit the others. Read the entire hymn below to get a deeper glimpse into the wonderfulsentiments of the author.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Revisited

The "Twelve Days of Christmas" is a song that many of us grew up singing - yet what do we really know about its origins?

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

It has come to my attention that the historical version of the song and its origins I posted here may not be completely truthful. Ah - the dangers of using Wikipedia as a source. I actually received an email from a family friend that contained this rendition of the carol's background. Nonetheless - I'm putting it out there as a possible explanation as to the song's history and meaning...

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for Faith, Hope and Love.

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old

Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six Days of Creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--

Prophesy,Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight Beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and

Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful Disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the

Apostles' Creed.

The popular Christmas carol goes like this:

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...

Why did you write "Night of the Cossack"?

I didn’t have a grandfather on either parent’s side and I was always envious of those who had one. I had very little information on my maternal grandfather, but one of the facts was he was a Jewish Russian Cossack soldier. This intrigued me. When my mother passed away I was left with only one relative, on my mother’s side, that was older than I. I decided to create a story about my grandfather for myself. As it developed, I found myself writing for my six children and fourteen grandchildren. Later, I let a couple of people read what I had written and they suggested I look into getting it published. I joined a local critique group and they agreed. As I pursued the story, God sent a publisher to me.

What is a Cossack?

Cossacks were members of several peasant groups of Russian and Polish descent. They lived in autonomous communal settlements, especially in the Ukraine, until the early 20th century. In return for special privileges, they served in the cavalry under the czars. They were well known for their horsemanship. They raided villages for supplies, women and young men to increase or replenish their ranks. Eventually they became a part of the Russian army.

What is your background as a writer?

I’ve been writing since I was fourteen. I started with poetry that I hoped would turn into song lyrics for rock & roll artists. This was a dream that never became real until I was 32 years old and then it was lyrics for Christian songs I wrote for a contemporary Gospel band. We were way ahead of the time with our music and it didn’t catch on in the mid ‘70s. I started writing non-fiction about that time and was published in a denomination magazine and later in an insurance magazine. This novel wasn’t started until I was 64. I never saw myself as a novelist until it happened.

What message would you like to convey to your readers?

Several things, but the two most important are: That the reader connects with Jesus Christ and readers will make a strong connection with their ancestors, especially those still living and find out as much about them as they can so there is a strong legacy to pass down. It’s sad that I don’t have any more information than I have about mine. I know the name of my grandfather and his brother and that’s it. I don’t even know the name of my great grandfather or grandmother. I’m finding this is common among Jewish families due to the fears of those who immigrated. My grandparents spoke nine languages between them. Whenever they spoke of the old country they didn’t speak in English so my mother, aunts, and uncles knew very little. They wanted their children to be Americans. They didn’t realize they were taking our heritage away from us.

Greener Grass or Just an Illusion?

You just witnessed a scenario play out in a local restaurant. The couple seated across the room was laughing, conversing and enjoying each other's company. The husband actually beamed as he listened intently to her words. They were so engaged with each other that they seemed oblivious to everyone else around them.

Maybe you observed a couple in church as they sat close to each other – reading the Word together and taking in the pastor’s sermon with great interest. As the husband puts his arm around his wife, you feel a little uncomfortable sitting by yourself.

Perhaps you notice your neighbor’s husband strolling down the sidewalk with her by his side. They are discussing something interesting because they nod and affirm each other's words repeatedly.

Here you go again – looking across the pasture to the grass on the other side of the fence… It looks so much greener. You just know it will satisfy you and fill that empty void. Is the grass really greener, or is it just an illusion?

Be careful little eyes what you see --- Don’t believe it! One of Satan’s clever tactics is to make you think you’re being deprived of something good. John writes in his first epistle “For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father, but is of the world” (I John 2:16). Covetousness is one of the sins of the eyes – and Hollywood gives us much to covet with regards to the “perfect” relationship. Their standard is unattainable and unrealistic. We must base our marriages on God’s Word and His beautiful gift of intimacy in marriage. God is relational and we must work on our relationship with Him in order to mirror it in our marriage.

Your enemy’s greatest weapon is to create doubt – not only doubt that God loves you, but even more sinister – doubt that your own spouse loves you. When you’re in a spiritually mismatched marriage, simply “replacing” your spouse will not solve all your problems. You may know a couple that divorced and remarried – believing that the new spouse would bring a greater happiness or contentment. Oftentimes this is not the case – but to the contrary – it often creates a feeling of hopelessness when the new spouse fails to live up to those impossible expectations.

Paul addresses the married believer in I Corinthians 7:10, 13-14, “Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband…And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.”

God ordained marriage between one woman and one man – until death do they part. Marriage isn’t

a convenience until you’re not happy anymore, or until your spouse makes you angry, or until you find someone better. It is an unwavering commitment – based on honor, integrity and devotion – not on feelings and mood swings. (Please remember abuse is grounds for leaving your marriage)

Your husband may be one that chatters non-stop or hardly talks at all. Every man is different and in most marriages – communication is the key to survival. We are still working on our marriage after thirty years. I tend to be more outgoing and verbal, and he is more reflective and quiet. Sure makes for an interesting conversation starter.

Recipe Title: Best Dressing Recipe Ever!

Book info: Christmas Belles of Georgia, Barbour Publishing, 2011. My novella is entitled Nick’s Christmas Carol.

Recipe: Start early in the morning (or can do the night before): cook 2 Jiffy cornbread mixes per package instructions in a 13x9 pan at 400 degrees until done. (15-20 min.) Let cool then crumble into bite-sized pieces. (I cut into 1 in. squares in pan and then crumble it up.) Toast 12 slices bread (I like whole wheat but have used white) cool, then pulse in the food processor until tiny crumbs. Pour breadcrumb mixture on top of crumbled corn bread.

Next (or next day after you get the turkey in the oven) prepare turkey broth by cooking the giblets in 4-6 cups of water or use 4 chicken bouillon cubes in water or prepared chicken stock. Use food processor to chop one medium onion, then 3 or 4 stalks of celery. Place skillet on top of stove on medium and melt one stick of margarine, then add 1 pound pork sausage and cook, chopping it into small pieces with spatula. To this mixture add the celery and onion and cook together.

To the 13x9 pan with cornbread and bread mixture add 1 t. pepper, 1 t. sage, 1 t. poultry seasoning and mix throughout. Then pour everything in the skillet on top and blend together in pan. Then pour 2 cups of the broth over this, adding more broth ½ cup at a time until it forms a stiff dough. It can now be cooked in a couple buttered baking dishes for 20-25 min. at 350 degrees if you prefer your dressing soft. My husband’s mother always made dressing balls, so if you wish to do that you can roll the mixture into balls or I scoop it with a buttered ¼ cup measuring cup and place the humps into a buttered dish and cook at 350 for 25 minutes. This recipe will make 28- ¼ cup balls which should serve around 14 guests.

Give Thanks to the Holy One

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” (Psalm 100:4)

The concept of thanksgiving is as old as civilization itself. Webster defines it as: the act of giving thanks; a prayer expressing gratitude; a public acknowledgment or celebration of divine goodness.

As Christians, we acknowledge God’s goodness and provision in our expression of Thanksgiving. God’s Word implores us to give thanks to Him. Both Old and New Testament books of the Bible encourage us to have an attitude of gratitude. Psalm 50:14 tells us to, “Offer to God thanksgiving.” Psalm 95:2 says, “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving…” The Apostle Paul, in Philippians 4:6 declares, “…in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” We are to develop and display a grateful heart.

Our expression of gratefulness to God is found in our praise of Who God IS. He is El Elyon – The Most High. In Genesis 14, Melchizedek, King of Salem blessed Abram and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High [El Elyon], possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He is the omnipotent God, the one who rules and reigns eternal. He is also Adonai – Lord, Master, and Owner. In Genesis 15, God told Abram he would be his shield and reward. Abram said, “O Lord [Adonai], GOD [Jehovah], what wilt Thou give me, since I am childless?” God was his Lord and Master of all things concerning him. The most sacred name for God is Jehovah GOD (Yahweh). He is the all self-existent God who spoke everything into being. In Exodus 3 we see the dialog between Moses and Jehovah as follows: “And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and later He said, “The LORD [Jehovah], the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.” Heartfelt thanksgiving for Who God IS blesses us and blesses Him.

We often don’t display thankfulness for those closest to us. Family, friends and co-workers are often short-changed when it comes to giving thanks. We all but forget their worthiness of our expressions of gratefulness. I thank God for my husband who is generous, devoted, trustworthy, and responsible. Thanking God for our children, though not perfect, keeps them at the center of our prayers and praises. Find a friend and thank them for their encouragement or support during a difficult time. Your co-worker may need thanking for the kind comment they shared at your last office meeting. Thank a stranger for their service and dedication to their chosen profession. Thank your pastor or lay-minister for a message or bible study they shared. Thank your parents for their valuable love and wisdom afforded you over the years. Express your thanksgiving in a tangible way. Express it often – and always in love.

Finally, thank Jesus for your salvation. If we had nothing else to be thankful for, that would be sufficient! Oh, how we thank Him for rescuing us from certain destruction and eternal doom. In II Corinthians 9:15 Paul says this, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” May we always be ready to tell others about our Savior and His gift.

For the Christian, thanksgiving is an action word – a continual state of living as we outwardly express our love and devotion to Him. Happy Thanksgiving – May Blessings Abound Always and in All Things!

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him (Psalm 34:8).

The Holiday Season is Here - Are You Ready?

The holidays are fast approaching… Are you lonely at home and amongst your family? Do you wrestle with a sadness and disconnect during a time when commercials and advertisements portray unity and happiness? Do you begin to fantasize about having what you see around you? What do you do with all those conflicting feelings and thoughts?

We all remember the classic Norman Rockwell painting of Thanksgiving Dinner. It’s the quintessential portrait of an all American family gathered for a special meal and fellowship. Sometimes life doesn’t imitate art…

When you’re in an unequally yoked marriage, you will have days where you feel miserable and venerable. You’ll feel isolated and out-of-sorts. We all can recall times when we’ve just felt alone…

Sometimes my spiritual sensitivity would kick-in and my husband’s choice of TV or movies would offend me. Other times I found myself trying to avoid spending time with him. I would be frustrated as I attempted to plan and schedule events around his likes and dislikes. When church related socials came up – I cringed at the thought of asking him to attend. I longed to share spiritual things with him and talk about the Lord… I know you’ve been there too. One thing is certain: we can’t become resentful.

Below is a brief excerpt from my book Mission Possible – Chapter 4 – Painful Reality

There unfortunately are things that you begin to dislike about him [your husband]. We are to “love the sinner, but hate the sin.” There were times I had to pray, “Lord, give me a desire for my husband … help me to love him with Your love, because I don’t like him very much right now.” Remember, you have to “take every thought captive, unto the obedience of Christ” (II Corinthians 10:5). Give it to God and then you will have peace. Isaiah 3:26 says, “You will keep him [her] in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” “Let not your heart be troubled …” (John 14:1). You will have peace when you give these struggles to God, and let Him keep them.

When I catch myself thinking thoughts of despair or wallowing in self pity – I look up and acknowledge to God that I need help – fast! What does He reveal to me in my moments of sorrow and helplessness?

He reminds me that Hollywood and advertisers would have me believe that every day is to be filled with roses and smiles and dreams come true.

He reminds me that I have a loving and devoted husband, even though he has not yet given his life to Christ yet.

He reminds me that feelings last for a season, but commitment is everlasting.

He reminds me that I tend to look at other marriages through “rose-colored glasses”.

He reminds me that nothing affects His love for me – not even my doubt.

When David was ruthlessly pursued by King Saul, he found solace and peace in God. David wrote Psalm 27 during that time and verses 13-14 express his faith in God: “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!”

The Apostle Paul struggled with a “thorn” in the flesh that kept him humble and under God’s authority. We often have a painful road to walk in our unequally-yoked marriage. God will give us the grace to persevere. As He did with Paul, so He says to us, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (II Corinthians 12:9).

Take a fresh inventory of your blessings and face the holidays with a renewed vigor and confidence, knowing that your Heavenly Father delights in you.

Celebrate Our Troops - Happy Veterans Day 2011

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11th. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. The United States also celebrated Armistice Day on November 11th until Al King, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner campaigned to update it to ‘All’ Veterans Day. With the help of then U.S. Representative Ed Rees and President Dwight Eisenhower, Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing ‘Armistice’ with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day. World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” Soldiers of the 353rd Infantry near a church at Stenay, Meuse in France, wait for the end of hostilities. The armistice ending World War I went into effect at 11:00 a.m., on November 11, 1918.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

On October 8^th 1938, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible."

The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans service organizations and the American people.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 preserves the historical significance of the date. It also brings attention to the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Tell us about your newest book, Letters to God, on a Prodigal Son—Overcoming Addiction Through Prayer

This power packed journal and guide was birthed from the painful passage I experienced while navigating the minefield of my son’s addiction. I kept a diary that contained many insightful prayers, letters, and scriptures that I thought would help others navigate the turbulent waters of a prodigal’s addiction, so I worked on transforming it into a book. I added two sections, Lessons Learned and Suggestions that I thought would further help others to avoid some of the pitfalls I experienced, while offering a lifeline of hope. At the time my son was going through this terrible ordeal, I couldn’t find any Christian books on the subject that gave practical and spiritual, not textbook, advice. Letters to God, on a Prodigal Son was designed to fit this need. It’s filled with the heart-felt letters and prayers of a mother, key spiritual insights and practical advice. My desire in writing this book is to help others and minister to them though this true life story.

What are some of the pitfalls you experienced in dealing with your son’s addiction and in writing this timely and powerful book?

It is sometimes very difficult for a parent to recognize the warning signs of an addiction in their teenager, especially in this culture today when drinking is so accepted. This was my downfall. I kept thinking my son was just going through a stage, especially because he would repent when something bad happened, like losing his license for a year or failing out of college. He would turn back to God and do what was right for a while, but then he’d fall again.

One of the pitfalls in writing the book was trying to figure out a way to take my personal experience and help others learn from it. I didn’t want to offer just another informational or book of advice on addiction, so I kept it in a journal format. I wanted others to see that God held me thought this very difficult time and that He can do the same for them. I also wanted to be very honest and real because as Christians we sometimes think we need to cover up our pain and even try to keep it from God and fellow believers. I wanted to show people that you can show God your pain, cry out to Him and go through different stages with Him right alongside. The last thing you should do in a crisis is stay mad at God and stop taking or communicating with Him.

What did you learn from this experience?

I learned that God is faithful even when we’re not, even when we get mad at Him and don’t understand what he’s doing. God wants us to draw near to Him and cast ALL our concerns, cares, worries and anxieties on Him. He has very big shoulders to carry our burdens and for us to lean on and even weep upon. I also learned that God is true to His word. You can believe His promises as long as you understand them, have faith and continue to trust God with the outcome. I also learned that it’s very important to surrender your prodigal to God. That’s the best place for them.

Zacchaeus - The wee little man sure knew how to climb!

Jesus had just healed Bartimaeus on the way to Jericho. The multitudes were ecstatic and praised God for all they had seen. As Jesus passed through that famous area – the one in which the city walls had miraculously collapsed – there were many citizens and visitors who just wanted to catch a glimpse of the renowned teacher and healer. There was still skepticism about whether or not Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah.

Jesus had told a parable earlier about the rough and hilly road to Jericho. In it He had shared how a good Samaritan had gone out of his way to care for a total stranger. Now as He was passing through the city, the crowds were growing as He made His way down the main road towards Jerusalem. He had a divine appointment that day – one which was set in motion at the very beginning of time itself.

Zacchaeus was a wealthy tax collector. He was in charge of collections for the entire region – and a man of substantial personal holdings. As was the custom under Roman rule, the tax collector often exacted taxes in excess of that required, and the remainder was kept by him. The Jews hated those from among their brothers who made a living from the extortion and theft that was their livelihood. Zacchaeus most likely didn’t have many friends.

Luke chapter 19 tells us that Zacchaeus was short in stature. He was desirous of seeing Jesus, but he had difficulty in finding a place from which to observe Him as He neared the city. There was a sycamore tree within sight, sturdy and high enough for him to climb, so Zacchaeus made his way there and was sitting on a branch as Jesus passed underneath. A sycamore in Biblical times was a fig tree, bearing fruit like the ordinary fig – directly on the stem - but was inferior in quality and unfit for consumption. The tree's wood was durable and highly valued.

The fig tree was symbolic of God’s blessings, prosperity and peace over His chosen people. However, the books of I Kings, Hosea, Jeremiah and Revelation all speak of the wickedness, baroness and judgment that the fig tree represented when Israel rejected God and His Sovereign rule.

When Jesus cursed the fig tree on the road into Jerusalem it was because the tree displayed leaves – a rightful expectation of blossoming figs - but there was no visible fruit. The nation of Israel appeared righteous outwardly, but they were inwardly corrupt and spiritually dead. Jesus came to them expecting to find fruit – but was met with empty words as they professed their coming Messiah. Jesus condemned the religious leaders in Matthew 23:25 saying, “Woe to you, scribed and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.”

Back to Zacchaeus… The text reveals that Jesus looked up and beheld him at the very moment He passed by. Imagine having spent considerable effort in shimming up that tree – perched on a lower branch, hoping to stay inconspicuous. But then, Jesus – a Nazarene from Judea – a well known prophet and teacher stops right underneath the very tree you are sitting in. He probably thought that Jesus would admonish him for his crooked and greedy lifestyle, or mock him for elevating himself about the crowd as indicative of his position of power. But nothing would be further from the truth.

Imagine his surprise when Jesus said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” What was going through his mind as he heard the invitation? Was his heart racing? Did he worry about his reputation and what the crowds surrounding him would think? The text in Luke doesn’t tell us any of those details, but what is clear is that Zacchaeus responded quickly and purposefully. Verse 6 tells us, “So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully."

Those that followed Jesus and others in the throng began to grumble about Him going to the house of a sinner – namely a despised tax collector. But Zacchaeus stood in their midst and said to Jesus with conviction and resolve, “Look, Lord, I give half of my good to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore four fold.” Jesus then said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” But what is salvation?

His encounter with Zacchaeus is a picture of our invitation to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior Zacchaeus’ actions are a metaphor for responding to the Gospel message. Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” Keeping that in mind, this is how Jesus interacted with His new friend:

Zacchaeus was “called by name” and invited to enter into “fellowship” with Jesus. He joyfully obeyed and became convicted of his sinful past. His heart motive was revealed when he announced he would restore what was taken from his fellow countrymen in an ill-gotten manner and surrendered his life over to Jesus. He was pronounced by Jesus to be a son of Abraham – brought into the Kingdom of God through his public confession and acceptance of Him as Lord. And finally, he embraced his new found salvation with the demonstration of “good works” by the changed lifestyle he displayed.

Don’t miss the chance to have a personal encounter with Jesus. I waited until I was thirty-three years old before I “climbed up” to see Him. I was desperate to make a profound change in my life.

The question is, “How well do you climb?”

Halloween - Can You Still Participate As A Christian?

Do you participate in Halloween activities in your neighborhood? Is there an opportunity for you to start a dialog with your neighbors and their kids about what Halloween really represents? Can you focus on death and use it as a witnessing tool?

No doubt you can answer those questions in several ways. In case you don't know the history of this "holiday" - here's a brief overview of the origins of Halloween.

Halloween is a culturally popular holiday observed on October 31st. It was a Celtic pagan festival, and then became the Christian holiday - All Saints' Day, but today is a secular celebration. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, carving Jack-o'-lanterns, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.

Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia, has this to say about Halloween: “The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hálȝena mæssedæȝ, the feast of all saints), All-Hallows-Even was not attested until 1556.

In traditional Celtic Halloween festivals, large turnips were hollowed out, carved with faces and placed in windows to ward off evil spirits. The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America where pumpkins are both readily available and much larger – making them easier to carve than turnips. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their doorstep after dark. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays, dates back to the Middle Ages. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of souling, originating in Ireland and Britain. Poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1st), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2nd).

The early Christian church moved a festive celebration called All Saints' Day from May to November 1 and renamed it All Hallows' Eve, from which we get the word Halloween. This was an overt attempt on the part of believers to infiltrate pagan tradition with the truth of the gospel. It was a bold evangelistic move designed to demonstrate that only the power of the resurrected Christ could protect men and women from the destructive ploys of Satan and his demons.

An article posted on ChristianityToday.com in 2009 cited a Barna Research study which had this to say:

“The majority of American Christians do not believe that Satan is a real being or that the Holy Spirit is a living entity, the latest Barna Research survey found. Nearly six out of ten Christians either strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with the statement that Satan “is not a living being but is a symbol of evil,” the survey found. 40 percent strongly agreed with the statement while 19 percent of American Christians somewhat agreed. In contrast, about 35 percent of American Christians believe Satan is real. 20 percent strongly disagreed with the statement that Satan is merely symbolic and about one-tenth (9 percent) somewhat disagreed. The remaining 8 percent of American Christians responded they were unsure what to believe about the existence of Satan.”

What can we as believers do to counter-balance a society that deems Halloween “harmless?” For starters, we can have an open door for evangelism and education. The deception of a holiday such as Halloween, with its witches, vampires, demons, skeletons, and overall theme of evil, can become an opportunity to demonstrate the dynamic power of Christ to redeem us from death. Halloween distorts the reality of true spiritual warfare, and glorifies the dark side of the spiritual world. However, we can tell them about the One who triumphed over evil, and who came to give us a purpose, and a God-given destiny.

If you allow your children to trick-or-treat, focus on costumes that are based on Bible characters, animals, cartoon characters, historical people, and other “non-horror” themes. We need to be careful not to add to the “feeding frenzy” of horror movie characters, demons, witches, ghosts, goblins, the devil, and other evil beings.

We often decorate our house with scary “nature things” like spiders & webs, lizards, snakes, mice, birds, bats - and not “death and demon” related items most often found in Halloween-themed stores. We carve real pumpkins or put out the plug-in type. We hand out candy or tiny Christian toys and witnessing tracts that are family-friendly. For the past couple of years (as an empty-nester) I take my two dogs out and walk the neighborhood, visiting with those we meet. You can make October 31st a night to talk about death, eternity, and how Jesus laid His life down for them.

Dying and decay are eminent; however, evil and the grave has been defeated by Jesus through His death on the cross.

We are more than conquerors over the powers of darkness, demonstrated by Jesus’ resurrection (Colossians 2:15), and the Holy Spirit’s power in us as believers (Ephesians 6:11-17).

Use Halloween as a teaching tool and an opportunity to witness. Share the good news of Christ.

Book Showcase for "Lonely Hearts" by Amanda Stephan

An Interview with Amanda:

Hi Deborah, thank you for having me here today. It’s nice to connect with you and your readers!

Tell us a little about your background.

My background is a little boring, but it’ll have to suffice. I’m a Christian romance author and homeschooling mother. Most people ask if I’ve always aspired to be a writer, and to be quite honest, I’d have to say no. I’ve never lain in bed at night and dreamed of being an author, or hitting the New York Times Bestsellers list (although it would be nice!) I’ve just always written. It was a form of therapy to me. If I couldn’t find a book that I wanted to read in the library, I would simply write my own. I still have stories from my high school and college days. No, I don’t let anyone read them, either!

What inspired you to write your book?

My inspiration for writing is my children. I want to teach them so many things, but only too often the words escape me at the moment. Its always been easier to write my thoughts down than to actually express it aloud, but yet I hate to journal. Go figure. In my first book, The Price of Trust, the point I wanted to get across was that abuse of any kind is wrong and should never be accepted. In my second novel, Lonely Hearts, I wanted to show people just how wonderful, and fleeting, family life can be. I see people around me that take so many things for granted, and I wanted to perhaps get someone to stop and look around at the blessings they already have in their lives.

What kinds of reactions has the book generated thus far?

The Price of Trust has mixed feelings, which is to be expected. Most are very positive, but some, not so much. Because it’s about an abused young woman, some people seem to think the heroine should never get past her pain and should have terrible issues in regards to loving someone. Fortunately, I’m living proof that with trust and faith in God, true love and happiness is indeed possible. God doesn’t want His people to be continually beat upon and discouraged, but encouraged, and thriving. Lonely Hearts, which is my newest release, has been getting positive results that actually were surprising to me. Initially, I was going to throw that particular story out as I like books with more suspense in them, but I never could bring myself to do it. Then, when my publisher said she was interested in it, I figured God had a plan for it as well.

What's the main message that you'd like readers to take away from it?

When a reader finishes Lonely Hearts, my hope and prayer is that they don’t take so much for granted, like their children. Those kids are only going to be home for so long, so try to make your regrets as few as possible and cherish each moment you have with those you love. No one is promised a tomorrow.

What’s next for you?

The next thing on my agenda is working on my Christian romantic suspense series that my publisher just picked up. It’s a series of three books (possibly four) that chronicle the life of Kyle & Deirdre Slade. It was supposed to be just one novel, but it became so large I had to break it down into a series. I think each book right now is at 70,000 to 80,000 words, so it was a must! I never thought I’d write a series, but guess what. Never say never…

Any final thoughts you'd like to share?

One thing I’d like to say is, remember that with God, all things are possible. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. ~ Philippians 4:13 If this were totally up to me, I would have never gotten this far in my publishing journey. Truly, God has a plan for each of our lives and I want Him to use me for His honor and glory. And if that means writing books that glorify Him, praise God!

It's Sunday Morning Again... Can You Relate?

It’s Sunday morning again. You get into your car and drive to church – again – alone.

I attend a couple’s class at our church. I used to be in a women’s Bible study group years ago, but since I have been attending my current church, my husband has attended services on occasion with me. He is comfortable with our pastor and is familiar with some couples that we knew from another congregation. I say all that to say this: Then why do I feel so out of place in church?

When our son was young, or when he was older still living at home, it seemed easier to go to church and not get distracted by couples sitting in the pews. Now that we are empty-nesters – it seems that I have become increasingly more aware of the fact that we are not worshiping together. We’re not even sitting in church together – much less worshiping together. I struggle with wandering and sometimes inappropriate thoughts.

In II Corinthians 10:4-6 Paul tells us, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”

To my husband’s credit – he does attend services with me on occasion. He has joined me in attending a class social or couples dinner outing – albeit reluctantly. He just doesn’t have a desire to fellowship with believers or be in a church setting. I have stopped trying to play Spiritual Shrink or Holy Ghost Investigator when it comes to “why?”

Truth be known, it was somewhat easier for me in years past when I attended a women’s only Bible study because we supported each other in prayer, in fellowship and in mentoring. It was more comfortable to be surrounded by other women who didn’t have spousal spiritual support. Now I find myself feeling like a fish out of water, or you could say – out of “living water”.

I often feel like a salmon, swimming furiously upstream – trying to leap over the rapids of “happily married couples” and the rocks of “you can be happy too!” mentality in my quest to reach safety. I know in my mind and heart that God loves me and I press into Him all the more when I feel discouraged. But there are times during the church service when I struggle to keep my focus on the preacher’s message – and simply look around at all the “couples” in church. Please, tell me I’m not alone…

Back to II Corinthians 10: in a spiritual sense - I shake my head and gather my thoughts once again. I sit and re-evaluate what’s going on in my mind and feelings, and give it over to God.

I take time to thank God for my salvation and thank Him for such a good man He gave to me 30 years ago for a husband – though I didn’t come to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior until 7 years into this marriage.

I regain my focus as I tune-in to my pastor’s sermon and re-adjust my thinking to align once again with what God’s Word tells me about my situation at home.

I recall to my mind I Peter 3:1-4, and how it is my “inner” woman that will attract my husband to Jesus Christ. The years of seeking to know God better, attending church, working on my Bible studies, praying, helping others and living out my faith – that is what is drawing him closer to the Savior. My Spirit woman will draw him nearer to the God who created him for fellowship.

I consider what I Corinthians 7:13-14 has to say concerning the unbelieving spouse, and how they are sanctified by the believing spouse. If the unbeliever desires to stay in the marriage, the believer is obligated to dwell with them in love and devotion – as unto the Lord.

This verse in I Samuel speaks to me regarding the above scenario: “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice” (vs. 22). The Lord spoke to my heart that my obedience to Him in loving and being devoted to my husband – regardless if he is a believer or not – is better than my “sacrifice” of living in an unequally-yoked marriage.

I do not have the right to play the victim and feel sorry for myself. I do not have the right to hold it against him. I must love him with the love of Christ and let God move in his heart and mind. I must concentrate on my obedience to what God has for me to do as a godly wife and helpmeet. I must keep my eyes fixed on Jesus and not on my circumstances or feelings.

Beware, that while you are busy serving and waiting, often the enemy will delight in torturing you with thoughts of defeat. You’ll be sitting in church, watching the other couples and think, “Lord, what about them?” “They’ve got each other, Lord…” “When is it going to be my turn?”

And the Lord would answer me, “What is that to you? You follow me.” The Apostle Peter questioned the Lord about John and Jesus told him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow me” (John 21:21-22). We need to have an attitude of gratitude and not question God’s authority and sovereignty. We are human and we will have days when we’re discouraged and down, but we must encourage ourselves in the Lord as David did in Psalm 42:11, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” If we never had anything else to praise God for except our salvation, we should be a most grateful people!

This past Sunday was no different than many previous Sundays, except for the fact that I caught myself doing exactly what I mentioned earlier in this article. But this time I looked around and said to myself, “It sure will be great to sit here with my husband, Lord, and worship You together. So glad You’re working in his life and heart.”

What a relief it is to give it all to HIM…

Autumn is Here - The Harvest is Ripe

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and winter and summer, and day and night, shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22)

In the New Testament, Jesus related the harvest to those He taught, healed, and ministered to. He was moved with compassion for them, equating them to sheep without a shepherd. He told the disciples and others who followed Him that there was a need for workers in the Kingdom of God - to labor for a harvest of souls. He says the same thing to us today:

In Matthew 9:37-38 He declared, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

And in John 4:35 He said, “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!”

A little history about harvesting -

In agriculture, the harvest is the process of gathering mature crops from the fields. Reaping is the cutting of grain for harvest, typically using a scythe, sickle, or reaper. The harvest marks the end of the growing season, or the growing cycle for a particular crop,

The end of the summer ushers in the beginning of fall, a time marked by crops and their harvest. For the Hebrew people, as for those in any agricultural district today, the harvest was a most important season (Gen 8:22; 45:6). The three principal feasts of the Jews corresponded to the three harvest seasons (Ex 23:16; 34:21,22). They were:

1. The feast of the Passover in April at the time of the barley harvest (Ruth 1:22).

2. The feast of Pentecost (7 weeks later) at the wheat harvest (Ex 34:22).

3. The feast of Tabernacles at the end of the year (October) during the fruit harvest.

The Feast of Pentecost was a harvest festival through which the people expressed thanksgiving to God for the grain harvest and other crops (Numbers 28). The feast was also known as the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Firstfruits.

Many precise laws were instituted regarding the harvest. Gleaning was forbidden (Lev 19:9; 23:22; Deut 24:19). And the first-fruits were required to be presented to Yahweh (Lev 23:10).

In present day Israel, the harvest festival is celebrated in the form of the Succoth; Succoth has historical roots which date back to the time when the Hebrews traveled to Israel (Canaan) and set up living booths along the way. A booth was known as a succah and people ate and worshiped in this space; farmers also lived in a succah at harvest time and gave thanks for the harvest. Today, the Succoth festival lasts for seven days, in September/October, and it is still traditional to build a shelter where families gather to give thanks, share meals and live together for the time of the Succoth festival. A simple succah is built from tree branches, flowers and fruits and decorated with gold and blue material, leaving one side open. The Succoth is also known as the Jewish Harvest Festival.

Sowing and reaping is an eternal principle.

Jesus taught that the one who sowed and the one who received wages for reaping, together rejoiced over the harvest. He revealed this truth to His disciples after the encounter with the Samaritan woman by the well telling them, “For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors” (John 4:37-38).

The Apostle Paul encourages us to continue in our efforts of sowing into God’s Kingdom. In Galatians 6 he states, “Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

Revelation 14:14-15 tells us, “And I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, ‘Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe."

The prophet Jeremiah proclaimed this in response to his heartache over the nation of Israel’s unrepentant hearts: “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!” (Jeremiah 8:20)

Lord Jesus, harvest our hearts for Your work in the fields of a lost world.

As we continue to stand in the gap for our unsaved spouses, may we also continue to sow in the Spirit using prayer, the Word of God, and our good deeds to plant in the garden of their souls.

Do you want to display a bounty of spiritual fruit to your mate? Then begin preparing the soil of your heart to receive the Godly tools necessary to plant those tiny seeds and nurture them as they sprout.

In order to reap a harvest of ripe, juicy, attractive fruit – we need to sow the seeds of those fruits: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control.

The harvest in our marriage will be the unity in the Spirit that we have always longed for...

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
